The Spiral and The Sea
This work was borne out of a desire to do something useful with the feelings of ambivalence and frustration I was feeling towards my own life during different points throughout 2017/18. Instead of dwelling on these feelings I decided to take my camera out to the same spot and photograph what I saw and write what I felt. Mostly I spent the time trying to understand what was real and what were the reactionary decisions that often come in to play during these periods of personal unrest. As a result of the loss of a friend during the making of this piece it, inadvertently, became a marker of an intense period of grief. The images are where I ended up and the words are excerpts from what I wrote when I was there. They were taken between July 2017 and January 2019, when the project came to a natural end
This piece was exhibited at Stills Gallery, Edinburgh as part of the Working Title Group Show. It sits in a wooden box so I can close the lid on that part of my life as I move onto newer and happier times.
